What a Kitchen Remodel Actually Costs in Dutchess and Putnam County And Why the Numbers Vary So Much

We get asked about cost before almost anything else. Which makes complete sense because a kitchen renovation is one of the biggest financial decisions a homeowner makes, and the numbers you find online are all over the place. $15,000. $80,000. $150,000. None of that is helpful without context.
Here's how we actually think about it when a homeowner in Dutchess or Putnam County asks us what their kitchen will cost.
Every home is different, and every renovation has its own priorities. Understanding the factors that influence pricing helps homeowners set realistic expectations before planning begins.
The Short Answer That Isn't a Cop-out
A kitchen remodel in this area runs anywhere from $35,000 to $120,000+ for a full renovation.
The gap is real. It's not vague estimating. It reflects genuinely different scopes of work. What puts you at one end vs. the other is layout, materials, and what's hiding inside your walls.
While online estimates can provide a rough idea, they rarely account for the unique characteristics of your home or the specific goals of your renovation.
What Actually Drives the Cost
Layout Changes
Layout changes are the biggest variable. Moving a sink means moving plumbing. Moving a wall means understanding what's in it. Sometimes load-bearing structure, sometimes electrical, sometimes HVAC. In older Hudson Valley homes, and we work in a lot of them, colonials and Capes and farmhouses built between the 1950s and 1990s, the bones don't always cooperate with what you have in mind. That's not a problem, it just gets priced into the scope.
A kitchen where the footprint stays exactly the same costs significantly less than one where you're reconfiguring the workflow, moving the island, or opening to an adjacent room. Both can produce a beautiful result. They're different projects.
Even relatively small layout adjustments can affect labor, permitting, and scheduling, so it's important to evaluate the overall scope before finalizing a design.
Cabinet Quality
Cabinet quality has more range than most people realize. Stock cabinets from a big box store sit at one end. Semi custom from a regional supplier is in the middle. Fully custom, built locally, is at the top. The difference isn't just aesthetics. It's lead time, fit on walls that aren't perfectly square, which is most walls in older homes, and longevity. We guide clients through this based on their budget and what they're actually optimizing for.
Choosing the right cabinet solution is about balancing appearance, functionality, and long-term value rather than simply selecting the most expensive option.
Countertops
Countertops are where a lot of budgets get revised. Quartz runs $70 to $120 per square foot installed, depending on the material and edge detail. Quartzite, which is a natural stone and different from quartz, runs higher. Laminate has come a long way and is a legitimate choice for clients whose priority is elsewhere. We don't have a preference on behalf of clients. We have a preference for materials that will hold up in how you actually use your kitchen.
Countertop selection often comes down to lifestyle, maintenance preferences, and how the kitchen will be used every day.
Appliances
Appliances live outside the remodel budget, sort of. We install appliances but we don't supply them. Most clients have already selected them or are working with an appliance retailer. What matters from a remodeling standpoint is knowing the exact specs before we frame out cabinet spaces. A 36 inch range needs a different plan than a 30 inch range. We ask for this early and flag it if lead times are going to affect the schedule.

What We Find When Walls Open
This is the part that surprises first time renovation clients most. In a home built before 1980, there's a reasonable chance we'll find something once the walls are open that needs to be addressed. Outdated wiring, plumbing that's at end of life, a soffit hiding ductwork that complicates a cabinet layout. We can't know it's there until we're in.
We handle this the same way every time. We stop, show you what we found, explain the options, and wait for direction before we proceed. Nothing gets done without your sign off. This is in the contract, but more than that, it's just how we operate.
This is also why we tell people to build a contingency into their budget. Ten percent is reasonable. It doesn't always get used. Plenty of projects come in on budget. But when it does get used, you want it there.
Unexpected discoveries are a normal part of renovating older homes, and having a clear communication process helps eliminate unnecessary stress during construction.
The Proposal We Give You
Before any work begins, we give you a written proposal that covers scope, materials, timeline, and cost. No ranges. No "starting from." A number. If the scope changes during the project, we tell you immediately and get sign off before we continue.
This matters because a lot of renovation nightmares aren't about quality. They're about surprises. We try to eliminate as many of them as we can upfront. The ones we can't, we handle transparently.

A Note on Timing in This Area
There's usually a 4 to 8 week lead time between signing a contract and breaking ground, depending on where we are in the schedule. Material lead times, particularly for custom cabinetry, add another 6 to 10 weeks. If you want your kitchen done before the holidays, the conversation needs to start in late summer at the latest.
